Are wizards just men with more power? I'm reading the book and it's really complicated, and what's up with Aragorn? Does he like two women? And what exactly does the lord of the mark mean?
thanks

wizards like gandalf and saruman are actually not human. they are the equivalent of balrogs (which explains why gandalf was able to defeat the balrog when normal elves and dwarves cannot). they are known as the Maia. like i said, they are not human, they just appear in the form of old men.

aragorn does not like 2 women. he likes arwen, but he thinks that she is going to the undying lands (far, far away...only elves and the people they invite can go) and that he will never get to marry her. so, while he is in rohan, he does not entirely discourage eowyn from falling in love with him because he's keeping his options open.

the lord of the mark refers to theoden. a mark is derived from 'mearc' which means territory. so, the mark refers to rohan, and theoden (king of rohan) is its lord.

Okay, Wizards are a completely different race (they're called Astari. Treebeard talks about remembering when gandalf came to middle earth with the other Astari). There are several men (including aragorn) who have abilities akin to those of wizards (he is farseeing, he can read minds, etc) so it's not about who has more power. Gandalf was more than 500 years old. As are most of the white counsel. It's not that aragorn likes two women. He has been in love with arwen since he was in his early 20s. However, he has deep respect and sorrow for Eowen. He sees that she is strong and proud and brave, but he also sees that she's incredibly sad like spring still clinging to winter's bitter frost is the way it was described in the book. The lord of the Mark is the name for the King of Rohan. Rohan is also called the Riddermark. So the lord of the Riddermark would be the lord of the mark.

Wizard's like Gandalf and Saruman may look like men, but there not men. Their of a race far more powerful than men called the Maiar. Sauron is also a Maiar, but he was among those of his kind corrupted by the evil Valar called Morgoth Bauglir (Melkon in the Valar language) by the elves. Together the Maiar and the Valar make up the Ainur (the Valar are the greater Ainur and thus the more powerful of the two).

Aragorn is only in love with Arwen.

The Lord of the Mark is the title of the king of Rohan. Rohan is reffered to as both the Riddermark and just the Mark.

I'm doing this from memory but I'm pretty certain that I have it right.

Wizards have been around since the earliest days of middle earth. So they at least live for thousands of years or are immortal, thus are not just men with more power.

Aragorn has one true love. Eowyns feelings for him are not reciprocated. Though he does like and respect her.

Rohan is also called the Ridermark(not sure about spelling there), so Theoden, as the king, is lord of the Ridermark, or just Lord of the Mark. (Mark is an old Germanic term for a border area)

Wizards aren't men, if you read the appendix, and The Silmarillion, it explains a little more, and Aragorn likes Arwen only, the other girl marries someone else...

The Lord of the mark? do you mean Theodred, the king of Rohan?

Dont listen to the first poster! The Lord of the Rings is one of the best books ever written. And so she understood a kids book, big whoopty doo! LOTR does get a little tedious at times but it is an excellent read!

And concerning your questions the posters above me got em right.

Wizards:
Wizards is just a name given by men (humans) to these people whom they thought were elves. Thier real name is Istari meaning "The Wise". They are actually Maiar (angelic beings) who were sent to Middle Earth to help the free people fight Sauron. Only 5 were sent to Middle Earth, their orders were to help the people not by using their Maia powers but by aiding the free people with their wisdom.
They were clothed with flesh so that the free people of Middle earth will not see them as powerful beings but wise ones. However by clothing themselves with flesh they also suffer the need of their bodies. Only 5 Wizards are actually present in Middle Earth but there are countless of Maiar present in Middle earth.
Gandalf: He was thought to be the wisest of all Maiar and was forced by Manwe to go to Middle earth. (this caused Saruman to become very angry because Gandalf was forced he believes that Manwe sees Gandalf as the key to completing thier quest)
Saruman: Servant of Aule (the smith Valar)
Radagast: Was given to Saruman as a companion however he is kinda under Saruman.
Pallando and Allatar: Servants of Orome who failed their mission.

Aragorn doesnt like to women it just seems like this because the original plot was changed. Aragorn was suppose to marry Eowyn (no I am not making this up. This is the product of my countless research).
