What is the point of having a dash carpet mat in a car?

it helps keep the heat off the original dash,or sometimes its used to hide the old cracking dash,a lot of people buy them to keep the good dash from cracking in the sun,they do work also,that's the purpose of them,good luck ,hope this helps.

Have you seen the reflection of your dash on you windshield on a sunny day ??? , if you have a light color dash ,it reflects in the inside of the wind shield making it difficult to see clear out side or the road , I have one and is of black non reflective cloth and it makes a heck of a difference , now I can see the pretty chicks walking down the street...

We had one on our other car since it was new to prevent damage to the dash. When we sold it the dash looked like new.
We used it to cover cracks on our old truck. So, you can use it for either one.
