Hhmmm... good question ... something to do with human phsycology.... maybe in the back of our mind we are thinking tht we might squeeze more juice out of it...!!

It's your first instinct because you think that the remote is just having a problem with buttons, not the battery. It is very similar to when you keep flicking the switch on and off on a lamp just to see if the lamp will turn back on, not that the lightbulb went out.

I don't
I open the lit in the back of the remote and massage the batteries by rolling them with my thumb a bit and
then they work again for quite a while

It is because some people still have a little hope that the remote will work again. It could also be caused by their furiousness since they don't want to go to the tv to push the buttons since they are lazy. I often do this since I'm lazy and still hoping that it will work again so I will make no effort,hehehe.

if you want to see if the batteries are still working, look at the remote through a mobile phone's camera. it will show up the light as it defracts the infra red they use
