Yes, he can go into the water, he will probally cry at first because of temperature but my son used to fall asleep in the water when I took him swimming, I would cradle him and kind of let him float on his back with his head and body in the water but not the face, the sounds in the water soothed him to sleep(wouldn't keep his ears under to long at a time though and make sure you turn his head when you take him out to remove any excess water.) But he should love it. Have Fun

Most babies love water!
I would suggest buying a Stage 1 baby Safety First baby float. They usually look like little boats with toys on them. This will help the baby play and enjoy the water and keep the strain off of your back trying to hold him/her up and keep his/her mouth above water.
Also, be sure to use baby safe sunscreen and reapply often.
I would also suggest a wide brimmed hat for baby. They sell little mini bucket hats that have strings so they don't fall off. This will help keep baby safe!
Also, make sure he/she doesn't get too cold. Adults have a tendency to forget that even though it's sunny out, to a baby's sensitive skin, the water is freezing! After about 30 minutes, take the baby out of the water and wrap in a towel and have some relaxation time out of the pool. This will help baby get warm again. After 30 minutes of being out, baby can go back in.

Your 4 month old could probably naturally swim. Havent you ever seen those babies on TV swimming under water.
I think its a great idea to put your 4 month old in the water and swim with him. Of course dont shove him under the water but stick him in a floatie and have a blast.
It takes away a fear of water and makes it fun.

I'd be more concerned about the sun by the water than about getting wet. He might not like the cool water at first, but should get a kick out of it.
You'd be surprised how well an infant can do in the water.

S/he could go swimming too. Just make sure to use a little swimmers or similar....that way if baby poops, you guys will be safe. Oh, and don't use a floaty yet. Keep your hands on your baby at all times!
