I was putting about the 6th ride on one of my 3 yr old fillies. I was in the round pen, and getting ready to ask her to lope for the first time. I knew she would buck. Her mother was a bucker. I was ready for it. Knew it would happen. Ask for the lope, we went 1, 2, 3 strides, then BAM!!! That little sucker tucked her head between her front feet, probably licked her back feet! I didn't last 3 hops.
Here comes the bad part. My stud was home visiting because it was spring and breeding season. He had been living in the round pen. Being the nice neat boy he was, he only went potty in 1 spot. There was a nice big dried pile of manure right where I landed. On my butt. I had dried manure go down the back of my pants AND underwear. When I stood up it slid down. Uch!
However, the filly couldn't learn that was ok, so I got back on right away. Dried manure and all. We proceded to trot and lope beautifully. Grinding that manure into unmentionable places. We loped 4 circles in each direction. I then got off and handed the filly to one of the neighbor girls that was there, instructing her to unsaddle and hose the filly while I took a shower.
Nasty!

When I was about 10 years old, my best friend had a horse. One day her father was letting the neighborhood kids take ride on the horse while he lead the horse. When I got my turn everything was going great until we reached the back of the house. At this time a bee stung the horse in the butt and the took off running and bucked me off. I landed right in the middle of the mud and horse poo!

I would have to say just little basic things that are easy, but people just get lazy and forget to do. Heels down, wrong diagonal, wrong lead (that's kinda hard to do but it still happens), and hand position. It's stuff that we were taught when we first started riding but some people just overlook it. Also when people wear spurs, but can't properly control their leg so it's flopping around and keeps hitting the horse. Or when people use a crop but they don't rest it on their leg or away from the horse when they are riding. Like they keep hitting the horse with it. If you are going to use aid, use them correctly. A lot of other ones were said that I completely agree with!!

Great question, I've enjoyed reading the answers!
My great, beautiful, wonderful Arabian horse would never EVER have thrown me on purpose -- but a few times I fell off!
One time he was in a field FULL of ankle high mud. I didn't want to walk down to get him, so my friend, who was already saddled up, let me ride down behind her then she helped me get on my horse bareback. Unfortunately, the other horses nearby started to run and my horse, naturally, started to run with them -- when I was only HALF on! He only went a few steps before I fell off. I landed on my knees but my right knee landed on the back of my left leg... No real injury, but for a few seconds the pain was ENORMOUS and I couldn't move at all.
I heard my friend screaming and looked around -- to see the entire heard of about 15 horses running STRAIGHT for me! I managed to wave my arms enough so that the horses parted and went around me -- but it was close! I think my friend nearly fainted!
Another time I was riding someone else's horse. Two of us were cantering side-by-side but this horse was doing something really strange, sort of cantering sideways and I couldn't get my balance. Suddenly a BIG black dog jumped out onto the trail and this horse spooked -- a BIG spook, off to the side. I went off over the horse's shoulder, somersaulted in the air and somehow managed to land ON MY FEET, standing beside the horse, holding the bridle. My friend, who was behind us, said it was the most graceful thing she'd ever seen! I'm glad I had a witness, because I couldn't do that again if my life depended on it!

We were borrowing a pony gelding named Rocket to use for our camp since one had colliced the day before. Although Rocket's owner said that his kids had ridden him, we decided to take him to the arena and ride him beforehand, just to make sure he'd be okay.
We put the bridle on, but also decided to keep his halter on, since that's what we would be doing with the kids. One person would lead the horse while the kids rode. (They were only about 5 and the others were special needs.)
When we got to the arena I began to lead Rocket around while my friend rode him. He began to toss his head, but stopped after I bopped him on the nose with the end of the lead rope.
After about five minutes of this we decided to have my friend ride him alone, pulling at the reins like the kids would.
Rocket went wild. He bucked my friend over his head and nearly hit her. The he bolts to the far end of the arena. My friend gets up and retrieves her hat and then we proceed to corner Rocket and catch him.
He threw his head in the air and ran right between us and towards the gate, just as a strong burst of Oklahoma wind pushes it open.
So now we have a crazy pony loose and the kids will be arriving in about five minutes. My friend and another worker finally corner Rocket and tie him up in his stall.
The best part of all this is when she turned to me and said, "Hey, that was kinda fun...Let's do it again!"

When I was five I got my first pony & I thought I was really hot stuff. The guy that owned the farm wanted to help me tack him up, and I refused to let him. He had been tacking my ponies all along , but this pony was mine now so I had to do it. Looking back I can still see the look on his face., like ok brat go ahead. He let me do it & I had no idea about tightening the cinch & I thought I was done. He turned me loose & Misty took off down the path in the feild like he was getting turned out. The whole saddle slid around & I was hanging under his belly for like 30 seconds, but it felt like 15 min. and I got drug & stepped on.I didn't care, I went & caught him & got right back on & rode all day!!!! But I listened after that!!

I was in Egypt and went on a group ride through a tiny town and onto the desert; watched from a dune as the sun set behind the pyramids. I took a really cool picture of the big orange and pink ball of fire going down between the pyramids; in the corner foreground of the picture is Azeeza's (my horse's) ear. ANYWAY since I'm an experienced rider (16 yrs of experience at the time) I asked the guide for an appropriate horse (instead of one that is used to transporting non-riders.) He gave me a beautiful white horse; beautiful but utterly uncontrollable. It was clear from her movements that I was going to be thrown any minute. So as we were leaving the town and headed into the desert I switched horses with one of the guides. We raced across the sand at break-neck speed for what seemed like forever, stopping occasionally to take in sights like I described above and to appreciate the experience. It was the only time in my life when "whooping" at the top of my lungs was ever truely appropriate and I ended up with a sore throat. SO unlike me. :) When we got to the end site we had a while to wait because half of the group had taken camels that were... uh... not quite as swift. While we were waiting the guide came up to me laughing and told me that my original horse was an arabian dancing horse and was therefore trained completely differently. He gave her to me to be funny because he knew exactly what would happen when I tried to control her with standard commands. One specific command caused the most "comedy" apparently: pulling back on the reins is the command to dance. Which, of course, felt like she was about to throw me because I had no idea about her training. So while we waited for the camels, the guide took me back out into the desert in the dusk and taught me how to ride this beautiful white dancing horse. It was SO cool. An odd (and kind of disappointing) coincidence was that I was so SO far away from home (USA) in the most amazing and exotic setting in a really really cool experience, and my beautiful arabian dancing horse was named Texas Rose. I'm not from Texas, but really.., TEXAS?! Seriously, though, the Americanized name did nothing to take away from one of my favorite memories of all time. Thanks, Someone Special, for allowing me this walk (ride?) down memory lane. As a rider, I'm sure you can appreciate how fantastic it was.
Oh... right... So the question was about being thrown... so I'll try to make my story relevant: Thankfully I made it through on top of Azeeza, but Egyptian safety standards are not what they are here. So as I was going at a dead run across the desert, an occasional riderless horse would run by ... one with a broken bit and two with the saddle hanging below the horse's belly. Amazingly, no one was hurt, but a few of my friends sure were stunned when they hit the sand.

Ok. I was riding Flissy my fave little mare ever. We had a jum,p set up but she kept refusing. So we put poles coming off of the jump on either side so she couldn't run out. She got to the jump, swivelld round, jumped the barrier pole and I come gracefully flying off!! Needless to say she jumped fine afterwards LOL!!
