My husband and I are purchasing a new home and signed paperwork to get financed. The loan officer forwarded our letter of pre-qualification to an agent whom I've heard from once in the past week and a half. I didn't sign a contract or anything with this agent, I haven't even met her. Can I just have another agent find us a house? and what do I tell this lady?

Yes, you can change agents. But, if you want to buy a house originally shown to you by the first agent, they will probably claim some of the commission (and get it). If you buy a house that only the second agent showed you, no problem.

Of course you can switch. Keep in mind, clear lines of communication go a long way. Give her one call, let her know you are ready to make an offer when the right house is shown to you. This will definitely get the ball rolling.
Since this is referred by a lender to her, she should be more on the ball, but at the least give her a time line to work within. If she doesn't step up, then feel free to shop for a good BUYERS agent. This will ensure that YOUR interests are protected. If you bounce from listing to listing, you'll maybe find your dream home and try to buy from the Listing Agent...guess what, you've now lost your negotiating power. Make sure you have someone without a contracted interest (for the sellers that is) handling the structuring of your offer. Someone officially in your corner.

How did the loan officer even know which real estate agent to send it to unless you indicated you were working with that person? Unless you entered into a agreement with the agent, you can change agents as often as you wish. If you have not obligated yourself in writing, you can do whatever you want.
Do you mean to get "pre-qualified"? You cant start financing paperwork until you have a house in mind and have a purchase agreement in place. You can get mortgage quotes based on guesstimated amounts you were considering borrowing, but you have nothing to finance if you haven't signed an agreement?
Shop around for financing...it is amazing how much the rates differ...watch out for those ARMs...

You aren't obligated to this lady. If you want to be nice you can email/call her and tell her thanks but no thanks to her services and shop around guilt-free. When you do find someone, and that person finds you a place you like and want, have your lender send your new agent your prequal letter to submit with your offer. Make sure the letter is general, doesn't state how much in dollars you qualify for. Just give the lender the property address. Let me know if you're shopping in CA

Absolutely change agents. She sounds like she is too busy to meet your house shopping needs.
Just drop her an email or give her a call saying that you are working with somebody else.
I apologize that you had a bad first encounter, there are agents out there that will work hard to earn your business.

Simply find another agent and tell this lady that you have chosen to work with a different agent recommended to you by a friend.
If you have not even MET her, you are surely under no obligation to work with her, should you choose otherwise.

Just find a better real estate agent---if there is such a thing. You are an adult and don't need anyone's permission to conduct your business. Personally, I would move on and not put myself out to contact her. If she ever contacted me again, I would inform her that I had an agent already but thanks for the slow interest.
