Native Indian or person from India?

Canadians like to think they and their nation have treated Indians well, and in some ways they have done better than the US.

But the legacy of colonialism/forced assimilation remains; child abuses from the (forced) residential schools continue to crop up, and land claims remain disputed - in some cases the Canadian gov't refuses to honor its treaties.

As a result, Indians who seek compensation are sometimes viewed as getting an unfair advantage, and Indians in general are sometimes seen as getting a "free ride," when in fact Indian poverty remains, Indian schools, health and water remain more poorly funded, and the social illnesses caused by the colonialist era remain rampant.
