It's a perennial plant that is a classic when it comes to plants that will thrive in the shade. It is valued primarily for its leaves, which - dependent upon the variety - can be small or huge, colors ranging from yellow to deep green to bluish, variegated, or solid colored with a lighter colored margin. It also has flowers, which are usually a lavender or purplish color, and they are fragrant. They like a moist soil with plenty of compost or organic matter.

Hostas are one of my favorite plants. Its a perennial and they tend to like thrive in the shade but some can have sun. The leaves come in different colors and vary on shape, texture, and coloring. They're relay good when it comes to filling up an empty space, and come in different sizes. They can be split and replanted as well. They also have stalks that come from the middle of the plant that has purple flowers.

all of the above answers are swell, but they fail to mention that slugs and snails LOVE hostas. they will climb over eachother's dead bodies to get to them, and decimate them in short order. i had to give up, as even the repellants and insecticides couldn't save my hostas. be warned.
