I am thinking about applying for a job in Northwest houston. The job location is 1960 and 290. How is the traffic over there and is it a nice location to live, any nice apartments, and what is the crime rate? Does it flood a lot, any construction. What is that area of town called so I can look up some apartments online. Thanks for your help.

I used to live near there. The area is called Cy-Fair, or Cypress Fairbank.

I used to live near Jersey Village, which is at 290 and Beltway 8. That is a nice neighborhood with a small town atmosphere, growing area and good school district (Cy-Fair). There are a lot of nice houses and newer apartments near that.

If you go further northwest, along 290, you will hit Champion area, which is also pretty good, with lots of new developments.

If you go a bit northeast along Beltway 8, you will hit an area called Willowbrook, which is at intersection of 288 and FM 1960. That is where a lot of businesses are, including a pretty nice size mall.

The crime rate in the area is average for Houston. Since the influx of the evacuees from N.O., Houston crime rate had increased, and it had shifted from area to area, depending on where some of the criminals go and where the police concentrates.

Don't remember much flooding problem over in that area. You see a whole lot more on Northeast Houston. Traffic is not bad, thanks to Beltway 8, which is a toll loop around Houston, as well as 288, which takes you from old Compaq/new HP to Beltway. 290 is OK, depending on the time of day.

If you are going to work and live in the area, there is very little traffic that you will have to deal with. Most of the traffic is inside 1960. Just in case you did not know, Highway 6 is in that area. If you travel down Highway 6 south from the 290 and 1960 area, you will hit the Copperfield area. Just west of Highway 6 is Barker Cypress. That area is growing quickly.

You will not have to travel into Houston from the 290 and 1960 area unless you want to. You have all of the shopping and grocery stores in the northwest side of town.

its a nice neighborhood with little to no traffic but the problem is it is pretty far out from the houston loop (where everything is). they are starting to populate more over near the 290 and 1960 area. i dont hear about a lot of crime there the main crime in houston is in southwest so 290 and 1960 is pretty far away from the main crime scenes. my family lives in the loop but my aunt lives near 290 and 1960 and when rita was targeting houston we fled over there because it was supposedly safer than the inner loop so i wouldnt say flooding is a problem there. i think you are looking a the cypress area but i am not 100% positive.

In that area, traffic is usually really congested at rush hour times. And it's one of the areas that tends to flood when it rains hard. But, just the lowlying spots on the road usually. There are a lot of new neighborhoods going up, so if you're into that kind of thing, I guess it'd be nice.

Clear Lake would be a better location for you than La Porte. But the ideal place for a couple wiith no children is the inner loop area.

The above poster means 249 not 288. 288 is downtown.

I have friends who live in that area (Cypress, Cypress-Fairbanks or just Cy-Fair). Both couples like it very much. They live north of 1960.

People who live in Houston suburbs tend to hate it. Traffic is miserable, weather is horrible, and crime is higher then it should be.

To experience Houston, inner-loop is the only way to live.

I would say that it is 50-50. Very busy but not the safest.
