Hey Buddy, PLDT services "sucks". Although Smart Bro is a product of Smart Communications which is partly owned by PLDT also I choose it.
I've been using Smart Bro for almost a year and its excellent choice compare to Globe Broadband. And the Technical Support is not bad. Smart is using there Cell site as an access point so if you are near with one of the cell site then probably you will get a good signal or a line of sight. Anyway access point at the cell site has a range of up to 5 km or more, it depends with the equipment that they installed.
My house in Philippines is 10 kilometer away from the main town and its been 6 years and up to now PLDT is still surveying my place if they can or cannot installed a land line phone. Well, thanks to the mobile phone and WiFi.

Dude... SmartBro isn't all that, but it isn't too bad either. I got 3 times about 5 hours of no connection only this week, but other than that almost no complaints, except that it takes about one hour before they pick up the hotline, so you are stuck with that 15 second loop of a song. First they will troubleshoot our pc before checking the base station, so I usually tell them to check the base station before checking on my PC.
Verdict:
If you are willing to spend some time on the phone with a call centre "technician"who will probably answer: "Sorry for the inconvenience, we have technical problems" SmartBro is the answer for you.
I am using it now for over a year and I'd love to try the PLDT DSL service, because it costs the same and includes a land line telephone service including one year of free direct dial to anywhere in the Philippines.
Same problem as yours. It is only being offered in selected areas. I live in Baguio and PLDT DSL is only offered in the business district and the inner city.

i use smart bro for the longest time.
i have a friend who first subscribed to pldt dsl but the connection and the service both sucks so she switched to smart bro. she didnt have a problem ever since.
from that, i am guessing that pldt dsl to smart bro switch is a wise move.
i guess smart bro's okay. when the connection's getting poor, you just send an email to their customer service, then they'll call you right away to fix the problem. most of the time, the connection is good anyway.
i was thinking of switching to globe broadband. i even took a survey here at Y! answers but most answers were telling me to stick to smart bro.
plus with smart bro, you can use a router for all they care. for globe, you can only use the connection for 1 computer.

I have been using PLDT DSL for the past 6 months and it's worth waiting for. In the meantime the PLDT dialup works fine if all your doing is e mail and some netsurfing. I know it's slow,
but for the price and reliabilty it's the best deal going.

I don't know what area you're in but I'm an American living on the North end of Cebu Island.
We did have Globe...(it was ok)
Then we moved into town and there was no globe open so we got Smart Bro....
I will forever use Smart bro. if service stays the way it is now..
Here it is much faster, less off line time, good customer service

I use Smart Bro and I have no problems with it. If however, you have more demands regarding broadband speed, I guess you'd better try Globelines. Smart Bro is only available in one plan, and that is Plan 999 at 384 kbps. If you don't find that enough, I suggest Globelines since they also offer Plan 1495 and Plan 1995 which offers up to 1 Mbps and 2 Mbps, respectively. Plus they throw in a landline phone too.

I understand you are upset. I have PLDT and believe me I know about poor connections. I have been wondering about that Smart chip. Don't you have to have drivers though and a contract with them? You know turn it on from their side. You would probably find more helpful info if you didn't ask in such an insulting manner. Try deleting this one and Make a civil readable question out of it instead of a rant. Good Luck.

I use Smart Bro but only at night and on weekends when I'm home. It's okay, not as fast as my office connection but good enough for home.
Once I was on sick leave, though, and tried to access my email, the service wasn't working. I think they allow business (higher-paying) clients to use the bandwidth of home accounts during business hours, because I was finally able to connect at 4:30 in the afternoon.

I'm using Globe Broadband and I haven't had too much problems with it, except for the occassional "maintenance" that causes service suspension for about 24hours.
