Probably the closest was Alexander of Macedon, as he was actually credited with conquering the "known world" by several ancient historians, and outside of the fledgling Roman tribe and the burgeoning Phoenician settlement of Carthage, there were no significant lands left to conquer when he passed away (although plans were being put in place to bring those few remaining lands to heel.

Hitler conquered Europe and parts of Africa well enough, but his war on Russia would likely have never been fruitfull- many experts claim Stalin would have razed Moskva in retreat rather than let it fall into Nazi control, and continue a self inflicted scorched earth policy, which would have cost Hitler massive resources with no reward, which would have stretched his army too thin.

Another candidate is Tamberlane (aka Timur the Lame first ruler of the Ottoman Empire, who came VERY close at times to crushing Christian Europe. The Mongol Khanate is another near-absolute ruler of the world, conquering nearly all of Asia and half of Europe, despite having an army that never exceeded 200,000.

And despite never being unified by a single ruler or cohesive civilization, Scandinavian tribes have wound up involved with major events in world history- while the most well known Scandinavians were certainly the Vikings, the germanic tribes such as the Goths and Vandal tribes that brought an end to Roman tyranny and birthed the rise of nations had originated from Scandinavia, and the Russia and its ensuing empire had its foundation when the Vikings began to "domesticate" and "civilize" the various Slavic tribes there and becoming known as the Kievan Rus'. They even reached North America (more specifically Canada and possibly, but not likely Minnesota) in 1002 A.D., and stood a good chance at eventually conquering/colonizing/influencing the American continent had infighting amongst the Vikings and bloody raids against the native Americans not discouraged further pilgrims from moving to Vinland.

~Toss up between Darius (with help from Xerxes and Cyrus) and Alexander. Both of them almost did, at least as far as the world was known in their day. As far as civilizations as opposed to leaders, all of Europe and the Western Hemisphere and Australia and significant portions of Africa are Teutonic enclaves to this day. On a more modern note, Billy Gates cannot be ignored.

Adolf Hitler; If he had not rushed into the war with the Soviet Union immediately after defeating the Western European nations. There was no need of it as Stalin was convinced he and Hitler were still allied.
Had he allowed production of the first prototype jet fighters in 1940 instead of waiting nearly three years.
Had he not declared war on the United States following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
We most likely be dealing with a Nazis dominated Europe and Asia today.

I would have to say Hitler. Because older empires would have had too much trouble controlling all that land, as shown by most of there collapses, since they didnt have the technology to maintain control over vasts amount af land. And if Hitler hadnt gone complely crazy and tried to take on russia and the US at the same time he probably would have conquered erope and later gone on to the rest of the world.

Genghis Khan, of course...his empire was 4 times bigger than Rome Empire. Only empire bigger than Mongol was Britain in 19th century, but it wasnt built by one single leader.

Genghis Khan united Mongol for the 1st time in written history...it was him who came up with the name of Mongol. Then he conquered China, Huns, Manchurians, Tibet, Musslims, Persia, Russia, Korea, Vietnam... and Northern India. Simply he conqurered 80% of civilized nations.
