The driving conditions are the same this time of year. South Dakota has I-90, and North Dakota has I-94. You can drive 80 mph on either. They also have very similar two lane highways, such as U.S. Hwy 2 in North Dakota and U.S. Hwy 14 in South Dakota. The main difference is South Dakota has the Black Hills, the highest mountains east of Wyoming. (I-90 goes around them.) Mount Rushmore is there, along with Custer State Park, which is the best place to see and photo wildlife in the U.S. The only major critter not there are moose. Gas is a tad cheaper in South Dakota too, but not by much. South Dakota also has the Badlands National Park, right along I-90. North Dakota has some badlands with different formations west of Bismarck and north of I-94.

By far, South Dakota is a better drive. Both of them have lots of wide open spaces, but South Dakota has more "attractions". You've got the Badlands, Wall Drug, various prairie attractions and of course, the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park and all of that, but you don't get all of that fun until you've driven all the way across the state.

North Dakota. You've got scrub grass, prairie. No trees and missile silos.

I am going on a road trip and traveling through South Dakota instead of North Dakota in order to see Mt. Rushmore in Keystone, SD. I have never been to either state but if you don't have any attractions in mind I suggest picking the state that is the shorter distance to your destination. Visit ndtourism.com and travelsd.com and see if anything interesting catches your attention.

I've never been there, but if I had to choose, I'd pick S. Dakota. It has Mt. Rushmore, and if you have any kids (especially girls) who read, there's also De Smet, where most of the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder took place.
