Yes to both questions, but be careful to test the water b4 you get back in. You could get burned.

There is no reset button on gas and propane heaters and the flame you heard was not the pilot it was the whole burner. The pilot light stays lit always. There are several questions I could ask you to give you a better answer but since I'm not gonna do that I will give you some solutions. If you turned the burner to warmer then that should help but one of these answers was right about the dip tube. if your dip tube is gone then you will have trouble getting hot water. Try turning it up just a hair, I mean teeny tiny, past warmer. See how that does....if that doesnt get it then you should call a plumber.

Gas is and probably will always be the way to heat things up. If your oven is taking forever, get it checked out, start by having the gas company come and run a system check, even if you can't smell it maybe the gas is leaking somewhere. Some of it you can check yourself the soapy water test around all the outlets is a good start, look for bubbles, but I'd have a professional do this job. How old is this oven??? I have a 7 year old and the time for heating and cooking is the same as it always was, you're not cooking with gas somewhere, maybe it's set for propane instead of natural gas, maybe it's just time for a change of ovens. The old hot water heater is a totally different matter, depending on where you live the crude (term for hard water build up inside a hot water tank) can build up exponentially. If you have known hard water (look for spots on all the shiny areas of your bathroom) chances are the hot water tank is due to be replaced. The coating that builds up can be done in as little as a few years in a really hard water areas with big lime deposits...You could try draining the tank, see how much water is really in there....I suspect your coils are long since coated with lime and it's time for a new tank....if you are in a hard water area don't buy it, rent it, then when it happens again in two years you just ask for a new tank.... With the dryer, try fewer clothes and set to less dry and throw something like the Norwex dryer balls in to fluff things up. We way over dry our clothes anyway and it just causes static.

When you turned the thermostat up, the sound you heard was the main burner kicking on to heat the water. That is normal.

Realize that the water should be hotter now, so be careful. If you are running out of hot water, you may want to get a new shower head that uses less water, or get a larger water heater. good luck.

In answer to your last question, yes the pilot light will go on and off when it's heating the water, that is normal. The size of the tank will determine how much water you'll get and I would certainly be careful how fast you raise the water temp at any one time. In order to be a green consumer we want to conserve our water resources too, so 5 to 10 minutes of showering should be enough, or turn off the water between sudsing. Put the plug in the tub sometime just to see how much water you are using, it's a real eye opener.

If this does not resolve the problem the plastic DIP tube that directs the cold water to the bottom of the tank may have crumbled.

Several years ago they did a big recall of some of the dip tubes. They would dissolved from the constant exposure to hot water.

If the dip tube has crumbled you will get very little hot water. The cold mixes with the hot as soon as it enters the tank. so all you get is warm water.

your tube that runs inside the heater from the cold water inlet down to the bottom of the water heater has fallen off. Call a licensed and bonded plumber to fix this if your heater is older than 10 years it would be wise to have another water heater installed.

You should not be running out of warm water if the setting was on low... as it should stay at an even heat.. Because now that you have set it higher yes it would turn on to warm it to that temperature. But test it first to make sure, as there might be a short in the thermostat..

You are right on both counts. You may have to replace the thermostat.
