It's 640, and you can figure this out with just logic. 45% is just under half, and 288 X 2 is definitely over 343, so the logical answer is 640.

That is a classic word problem.

Say that N is the number of students in the school.

Then .45 N = 288

Now divide both sides of that equation by .45 to get N to be by itself on the left side.

You get 640 kids in the school from the arithmetic.

45/100 = 288/x

cross multiply

45x = 28800

divide by 45

x = 640

there are 640 kids in teh school.
