It depends on what type of car seat that you bought. Is it a convertable one that can go rearfacing and forward facing? You should keep your child rear facing until she is over 20lbs AND one year old. This is because their neck muscles have to be strong to have them facing forward incase of a collision.
Most carseats will say on the side the weight requirements. Our daughter is 21lbs and 9 months. Our dr. told us last week we couldn't face her forward until her 1yr birthday. You can also take the carseat that you bought to the fire station and they can tell you if it's safe for your child.

What do you mean a "real car seat"? An infant should be in an infant car seat for weight up to 20 lbs. She should be rear facing until 20 lbs and a year old. After that, she should be facing forward and in a car seat for 20-40 lbs or more If the carrier came with a base then it probably is an infant car seat. Talk to your pediatrician if you aren't sure or visit Target or Toys R Us. It's important she is fastened in correctly.

My daughter grew too tall for her carrier before she was old/heavy enough to face forward. So, we had to buy a regular car seat (one that stays in the car, not one that you can unhook and carry the baby in.) So, if that is what you mean then your child can use the "real" car seat as soon as she is too tall or heavy for the carrier. However, she does need to stay rear facing until she is at least 1 year and 20 pounds.

Most "real" car seats" can hold infants over 7lbs. The infant carriers are easier which is why parents generally invest in them, but you could have bought a car seat that doesn't come out most likely when your baby was born. They all vary in weight and height restrictions, I wish I could tell you a formula to picking out car seats. Just ask other parents what they like and don't like about their car seats and that generally gives you a good idea about products that are out there. I stopped using the infant carrier because my daughter became so heavy that I couldn't carry her in it anymore and she was maxing out on the height. Most of the popular brands hold infants about 28-30 in. I wish I could have used that thing forever.

One year or 20 pounds, there are also convertible ones where they are rear facing and you can turn them around at 20 lbs or a year. I have an evenflo triumph and it goes from 5 pounds up to 35-40 I think. My daughter outgrew her infant carrier at 4.5 months and I put her in that and she still uses it and she's almost 2. I ended up turning around to face forward when she was 12 months and she weighed 20 lbs 7 oz.

I have the 3in1 convertible car seat and my doctor said with one of those you can put the child in it when they are born (hence 3in1) you still have to have it facing the backseat until they are 20lbs AND 1 year.. Sometimes longer-ask her doc to be sure.

I just watched a link on YouTube about keeping your child in the rear facing position for as long as possible to keep them from breaking their legs in a collision...It was informative you may be able to find it under car seat safety.. good luck
