How does a website like you tube and something similar make money ?

My question is how can a website like YouTube or something similar generate income without charging any money for membership ?

Most sites like Yahoo make their money from advertising. The site is free, the more members they get, the more members they get the more exposure advertisers get on their pages.

Some sites pay 'per click' or 'per hit' so when you clock on an advertisement, the site makes money.
