Abstinence is definitely better. If people would get their heads out of the sand about "safe-sex" before marriage, they would realize it damages the young person. How many adults today would have better marriages if they didn't toy around with sex before marriage.

Abstinence should be the emphasis of any sex education but kids have to know how to be safe also. I think the schools who are having parenting classes where the kids have to take care of the "virtual" baby for several weeks is the best educational tool they have come up with for a long time. I haven't known any kids eager to jump into bed after several weeks of being responsible for the "baby". Kids can also get a wake up call if parents give them some heavy responsibility for siblings and babysitting. That's how it was done "back when". Parents are failing their kids on this subject.

Abstinence is better because it is not socially acceptable or desirable for a child in the 5th grade to plan parenthood or to have sex. They cannot marry, make sound financial decisions or supervise a family at that age without parental consent and guidance.

In 5th grade it's ok to teach abstinance. I think a better idea would be to teach about dating. There are 1000 variations of 'does he like me?' that I believe girls don't really know what they want in a relationship. They only want to be in one. If they knew how to find the right guy, the sex issues would resolve themselves

I believe they should teach safe sex, but touch on abstinence and its benefits. If I had known anything about sex when I was a teen I might not have ended up with twins at sixteen. At the time, I didn't even know what a condom was! I think teens need to learn how to protect themselves..from pressure to have sex to STD's and pregnancy.

the better way would be abstinence but the way schools do it is they teach all the safe ways and when all that is done they throw in a line like "abstinence is truly the only safe way" and move on

Abstinence! I personally think Planned Parenthood should be for other institutions...not schools!

Abstinence only programs don't work unfortunately.
We need to teach our children that abstinence is the best choice, but if they are going to have sex they need to know how to protect themselves. I was taught how to put a condom on someone in 6th grade, I was also taught explicitly about STDs and pregnancy.

This gets so annoying...they always teach us abstience is good because we wont get STD and stuff...and they always say dont have sex, has anyone else thought bout the reason there is sex!? Of course teach the kids how and why its important, BUT teach them WHEN too. If we listend to them now and not have sex then who cares about gloabal warming or a nuclear war we will just die off from stupidity
