I'm fairly certain area rugs are not a source of cooking oil.

If the rug is too big to move to a bathtub or sink, blot up what you can with paper towels and cloths, and then squirt some Dawn or Joy on it. Using damp sponges, rub gently and then press almost-dry sponges against it to take up the excess water and soap. Dab rinsing water on it, taking up the excess, and then blot again with new paper towels and cloths. (Check the underside to make sure water isn't pooling under the rug.) Then dry it with a hair dryer or a fan blowing across it.
A friend just advised that you don't put any liquids on it. Blot it up with paper towels, throw down some corn starch or powder, brush it around and then vacuum it up after a few minutes. Repeat if necessary. Once the oil appears to be gone, clean it with rug cleaner.

Lots of dawn dish soap, drape it over something or into the tub, apply lots of dawn to the spot. rub it in, and spray it off with hot water.

Red ink, lots of it!!! Lol...
What you need is a oil solvent that wont destroy the carpet or colour it. Google oil solvents, im sure you'll find something there.
