It depends on the driver.
The rotary can rev much higher, and delivers power smoothly. For the most part anyway, unless it's heavily modified.
The V8 will have immediate power & torque, but will run out of breath at higher RPMs.
In sum. Rotary = linear power and torque; max horsepower at higher revs. V8= immediate power and torque at lower rpms.

Jose sounds like hes correct here. I really haven't heard of any racing rotary engines. Anyway whatever the correct answer is buy a V8 anyway because its cheaper to repair.

The one with the higher horsepower to weight ratio of the vehicle and potentially the one with the better driver. Rotary engines behave much differently and produce most of their power at high RPM, so the driver needs to know how to take advantage of this.

Don't know who would win now, but in 1972 when the RX2 came out Hot Rod magazine put it up against a 302 Mustang and it won.
