You two are funny!
A thousand a week is $52k a year. That's pretty good money for picking lettuce. I'm more curious to hear what you have to say about the author's view of "entitlement"...

Whenever any politician says that there are jobs Americans won't do, I am insulted. I currently work as a janitor. What does my job entail? I clean up messes left behind by people with three or four degrees. I have been in the food industry as well as housekeeping for hotels. I have even worked on farms in the summer. You name the field, I have worked it, with few exceptions. The only thing holding people back from certain jobs is pride. We shouldn't be too proud to take any job that comes our way. A small paycheck is better than no paycheck, and I know this from experience.

This is an excellent point. You are very intelligent to bring this up. I think we should be compassionate to the poor immigrant that just wants to get ahead in life. Americans come from immigrants and have traditionally been upset over new waves of immigration. This too shall pass.

As a business owner i pay 13.00 an hour for a fairly non skilled job..retail sales!!! And even then it is hard to get people to show up!!!Unfortunately I can see no way even at 50 k a year that many Americanos would get off their large behinds and from behind their Hewlett Packard to do hard manual labor in the fields!! I am for documented legal aliens to do the work that us fatsos won't do!!!

I grew romaine and black seeded Simpson lettuce in my garden this year. It's easy and healthier for you than those glorified balls of water called iceberg lettuce.
More people should try it and worry less about the price of head lettuce at the store. Be your own lettuce picker.

Actually, minimum federal wage is 5.15 per hour, so it would work out to $206 per week to hire someone for minimum wage.
Granted, most people don't want to work for minimum wage, and many states set the minimum wage higher. For example, in California, it's 7.50 per hour (going up to 8 in 2008), so that would be $300 ~$320 per week.

If they would give me a thousand a week, plus FREE healthcare, PLUS food coupons, PLUS financial supplements like they do the 'real pickers' I would quit my career of years and sign up...... in a heartbeat.
