I dont want to start a race debate with this question, so please refrain from answering this question purely based on race.

The headline is: Race a factor in who roots for Bonds, which may very well be the case, I dont know..but the part of the story that I found interesting: some dude says :
"When you look at the whole era of steroid use, why pick on one man?" asked John Primus, a black fan from Raleigh, N.C., said at Wrigley Field. "Clean up that whole era. If he was 300 home runs down, nobody would say a word. It's just because he's so close."

I dont want Bonds to break the record because he already admitted to using steroids, not because he's black.. he just says he "didnt know it was steroids"..which is a joke.
I am rooting for Hank to keep the record because we know for fact he DIDNT use steroids (and he happens to be black too).
I wouldnt want McGuire to break it either.

Race being a factor is just ignorance. The record Bonds is going to break is held by Hank Aaron. Last i checked, he was of the same race as Bonds. Yes it was a factor for Hank, being the era and who he was chasing. Hank couldve been white as snow and still may have been hassled because he was chasing Ruth.
Race, non issue. It doesnt even matter that he is a jerk to the media. If he was a jerk who had nothing linking him with steroids, i would side with him any day of the week. This is a precious record in baseball, without the help of steroids, it will not be broken, ever. (not given major rule changes in the MLB)

I think race is a factor in lumping McGwire in with Bonds. McGwire did andro - a legal over -the-counter supplement. McGwire was a legitimate home run record type player since he broke the rookie record when he was young and skinny. He didn't just blow up at 35 plus years old and start smacking tons of home runs like Bonds. People bring Big Mac up for 2 reasons: RACE and because he wasn't a snitch.

Personally, I think the best thing might be to reset all records to what they were before the first known use of steroids. The hypocrisy of the whole situation simply reeks. McGwire (who is white) is questioned about steroids and suddenly develops amnesia; Sosa (Hispanic), who has give hundreds of interviews and made hundreds of personal appearances without difficulty suddenly "no hablos Inglis" and needs an interpreter when questioned about steroids.

I don't think race should be an issue. It is all about the game and I think if you play fair and break a record it should hold, Bonds didn't play fair. He should have had to start at zero when steroid use came into play.
