I lost my job due to budget cuts and have had no luck in finding a position so far. I spoke with my district and they said they may have a couple of openings but asked if I would take a teacher's aid position if nothing came open. I could work on my Master's if I take the job and have insurance or I could draw a bigger check--unemployment with no insurance and go back to school.

Insurance is a big factor...and it is easier to get a job if you have a job. Also, if you are an aide then you will be in the district and if a position comes open it will be easier for you to get it. I vote for taking the aide position. However, I think you will be pleasantly surprised and be offered a teaching position somewhere in the district before school starts.

I was in the same situation once, as were my peers.

It's usually a good idea to draw unemployment over the summer. You earned it, after all. You could see what openings are available the end of August, when the school year starts...perhaps there will be one you like, if someone gets pregnant (that's what happened to me). Then, you could choose to be the teacher's aide, if needed, to tide you over until you get accepted to the Master's program of your choice...maybe even start mid-term in January.

Good luck!

Unemployment is finite, though, and staying in the classroom will at least keep that employment momentum going. And you can't discount the cost of insurance nowadays.....work that into a major deduction from the unemployment check and working may be a better plan.

I'd take the teacher's aid deal. Everyone needs money in their pocket, and you'll be "in the mix" for the next opening(s).

Take the job, insurance, and work on your masters degree. Why are you asking such a foolish question. On second thought...if this little problem forced you to the www for answers, I don' think you should be anywhere near children.
