The afterlife. Well, more realistically I'd have to say the spirit realm. The curtained arch seems to seperate the realm of the living from the realm of the dead/spirits.

Ghosts in Harry Potter are beings who did not pass over for some reason. According to Nearly Headless Nick "Wizards can leave an imprint of themselves upon the earth, to walk palely where their living selves once trod." Nick says because he was afraid to die he chose to remain behind as a ghost.

i really dont no but where ever it is he is better off not having to hide from the ministry and not worry about not doing enough for the order or being cooped up

well in the 7th book it says that they found his body already...so, nowhere important..
