Hi. I have a fostex mr-8 mkII and I want to start recording. Thing is, I've heard about preamps and EQ. What are these? Which ones are good to get? Preamps make the mic louder? What model do you recommend? Any experienced recorders out there?

A preamp is a small amplifier that boosts the signal up to what we call line level. Line leve is the signal used by mixers, soundcards, effects and basically any recording gear you can think of. If you simply plug a microphone/guitar into a soundcard, the signal will not be high enough. You need to boost it up a little bit.

If you have a live sound mixer, the trim knob is a preamp. The are usually at the very top of the mixer. The preamp / trim knob is used to boost the signal up to line level so the rest of the mixer can do it’s thing (combine audio channels together).

If you are just getting started with recording, you’ll need a preamp channel for every microphone you intend to record. Beginners look at mic preamps as a volume booster. However, pros. use preamps and EQ for their tonal impact.

Preamps are used to run mics and instruments through to get better sound quality and definition. Here are some preamps I sugest depending on your budget:

PreSonus BLUETUBE DP Stereo Dualpath Mic/Instrument Preamp $199.95

PreSonus TUBEPre Preamp $99.99

Grace Design Model 101 Mic Preamp $595.99

No offense , but you have a 8-track digi recorder and I'm assuming you're into music but you don't know what EQ's or preamps are ??? Might want to take a recording studio 101 course that way your finished recordings will be alot better. Good Luck !

I have a DigiTech - there is a setting that amazingly will render your electric guitar to sound like an acoustic. Get one.
