I have heard the story once, but can not recall it.

When MLB split the two leagues into two divisions each in 1969, the Cubs and Cardinals went to the NL East. The Reds and Braves, both further east on the map, went to the NL West.

I had heard the Cubs and Cards wanted to play more games in the Eastern Time Zone and their clout won out. Is this accurate?

It was more about not having to make west coast trips, but being in the same division as New York has always been important. The real goofy alignment was in the American League after the Seattle Pilots moved to Milwaukee. The Brewers were moved to the East with the White Sox in the West. A lot of politics was being played.
