If the priests who commit these crimes AND the higher ups who conspire to hide these crimes and protect the priests were all sent to prison for life, these crimes would start to decrease.
The Catholic church began forbidding priests to marry about 1000 years ago because the Pope wanted their estates to go to the church, not the priest's families. When enough people stop giving their money to the Catholic Church to be paid out in these cases, the Pope will sit up and pay attention. The Catholic Church is the richest organization in the world and they should be forced to make these payouts until they are bankrupt. That would cause some changes. .It is not normal for a man to live without sex. I have a problem with the type of man that takes those vows and then commits such atrocious crimes. Ant the church officials who refused to settle this case until the day before trial was to began, prolonging this sad situation need to spend time in jail with their pervert friends.

If the church wanted to go after them as individuals, they could, but as they have taken a vow of poverty (like the pope has *sigh*,,, and Yes, I am a confirmed Catholic, but not actively practicing) they would have a hard time collecting
The Priests, or whomever is in question, was representing the church, which is why they church is liable.
by the way, how many of you think at least 30-40 percent of the plaintiffs were just jumping on the money bandwagon?

Do you honestly think the $660 million came from the Church caufers? You are talking about the Catholic Church, the oldest Christian Church in existence. they have a wealth accumulated over 2000 years. They own real estate, investments, they have holdings and businesses. trust me, the $660 million is a drop in the bucket, and it only equals about $1 million per child molested. You can't put a price too high on harming a child like that.

Yes, the church should compensate people who as children had so much taken from them. The priests should be imprisoned--what they did is beyond wrong and disgusting. Shame on the heads of the leaders who looked the other way.

It is a tough pill to swallow, especially for a Catholic as I am. the problem is that people are suing the church for covering up the actions of its priests.
In most cases, these crimes are brought up after the statute of limitations and no one can be legally charged. So people go for what people really want. Money.

First of all... are you Catholic? If not.. then it is none of your business.
Secondly... even tho it is a lot of money... the people who were involved deserve it.. crimes were committed.. should have been prosecuted.. but since they were not.. yes.. someone has to pay.
The Vatican has lots and lots of money. some of it mine.
I say go ahead and pay... then clean up your act Fathers!!!
