We recently got two male angelfish and put them in with the two females in our 50 gal. hexagonal aquarium. After a while, we noticed the males staying in one corner and if they came out the females would attack. What should I do?

I assume you know for a fact that you had two females and know for a fact that you purchased two males. Angelfish are sometimes hard to sex and only experienced breeders can tell for sure without venting them.

Occasionally two females will pair up and act as though they were a mating or mated pair. They are territorial, just like other cichlids, and will not tolerate new fish in their area.

It sounds like your original two females that have become a pair. The only way to change this is to remove one of them so the other will look for a new mate. Many times they will not accept new fish but it has happened. With two new males, you should have them fighting over the single female in no time. Then you will have an extra male to put with your extra female. With any kind of luck, they will pair up and you will have two pairs.

As 8 in the corner says, this all sounds to me like the old yeh thats a female, some shop assistants barely know the difference between and Angel and a platty, its not easy as 8 says to sex Angel's I keep them and Discus and they will pair female to female on occassions which can be annoying and even though I've kept them for donkeys years I still make mistakes sexing adult fish.

Your angel fish have paired up and are mateing. place them with their respectable mates in seperate tanks. Look for any eggs (they will be see-through or opaque)

Typically the male fish guards eggs....they take turns letting the female "fan" the eggs to keep them from rotting by circulating the water around them. Good luck. After the eggs have hatched, you will need to have a non-powerful filter (or it'll suck them right up) and remove the parents because they will eat their own young as they're hatching (they kinda wiggle and swim like they're drunk! Very hard to see though!)
