What will the the Future be like?

For next year, a wee bit more.
For the next century, all bets are off.
If one could predict the future accurately--which no one can, in my honest opinion--life would be a lot simpler and easier to plan.

Imagine the following scenario:

The year is 1907, and the place is Chicago. You and your spouse are enjoying a Saturday evening dinner with a colleague and their spouse.

The meal is quite filling and tasty and afterwards all of you gather in the parlor for conversation.

You colleague begins to speak. He tells you that someday there will be a medium-sized box with a glass panel that will almost cover one side of the box. It will be hooked up to electricity and it will have moving pictures, in color and with sound. You will be able to view programs ranging from light comedy to enthralling drama. You will be able to sit in your parlor in Chicago and listen as the President gives a speech. Not filmed, but AS HE IS GIVING IT! You will be able to see and hear of events that have happened around the world, within minutes of the event......You would think your colleague a mad man!!!!!

He speaks of these newly invented flying machines...that someday they will be capable of carrying almost one thousand passengers in comfort, with meals and beverages. He tells you of these flying machines carrying you from New York City to Los Angeles, California in a matter of five or six hours. He tells you of other flying machines that will be capable of flying thousands of miles an hour at altitudes far above Mount Everest. He tells you of flying machines with military applications that will be able to spot enemy flying machine twenty miles away, firing a rocket that will destroy the enemy flying machine from that distance. The two flying machines never having seen the other..........You would think this man to be absolutely insane!!!!!!!

He points at that new-fangled invention recently installed in your home; the telephone. He tells you that someday, that telephone will need no wires, will operate for hours on batteries smaller than a ladies compact. That you will be able to conceal the telephone in the palm of your hand and by pressing as few as a dozen buttons on that telephone you can talk to almost any country in the world, instantly. He tells you that you will be abel to take photographs and moving pictures.......You would think this man in dire need of commitment to a sanitarium!!!!!!

He smiles, and again speaks...He tells you of a day that there will be a smaller version of the box with the moving pictures placed on a table(it too has a glass panel on it), and connected to another box and powered by electricity. And, by manipulating this box through a keyboard much like the one found on a typewriter you will be able to create and print high quality documents and pictures in seconds. Even with a little effort you will be able to calculate, in mere seconds, the answer to the most complex mathematical formulas that would otherwise take the most learned mathmeticians and most erudite professors months to process! Furthermore, you will be able to connect this "box" to other boxes via phone lines or other communication means and access information and data from almost ANYWHERE in the world and do so within the blink of an eye. And you would be able to converse with anyone possessing another "box" at the most far-flung corners of the world in an eye-blink........You would begin to wonder what demons possessed this man!!!!!!!

The automobile will transport you at speeds thought incredible and will do so in comfort. If it is a hot day, you will be able to cool the interior, if too cold, you will be able to warm the interior...and all this as you listen to your favorite music mounted on the dashboard. There will even be specialized automobiles that will travel faster than the speed of sound and others that can be driven at sustained speeds of over two hundred miles and hour for several hours.....You would certainly begin to question your association with this lunatic!!!!!!!

Cancer? Pneumonia? Leprosy? While still serious diseases they will no longer be a death knell........Sheer madness!!!!!!!!

By now, you would have surely called the authorities to wrap this man in a straight jacket and carry this insane person away!!!!!!!!

REMEMBER! OUR SCENARIO IS SET IN AN AGE OF ONLY 100 YEARS AGO!

What will the future be like? I don't know.....it's a vast, blank canvas that our offspring, and their offspring will paint with vivid colors and patterns we can never imagine.
