Marriage is never hopeless until you & your spouse actually give up trying & believe that nothing can be done anymore. People give up easily. 40 years of marriage is awesome! If you made it that far, then that definitely counts!

Well this is an interesting question, I have been married for almost 20 years, I am a hard worker and take very good care of myself, I just turned 40, I am a size 2 and I work 6 days a week, I feel so unappreciated and used.My husband is a ***** and is ungrateful. I think I am very easy going and it is not working for me I am thinking of getting out of this as well. I am not sure how but I will figure it out, I have bought a lot of selfhelp books they are really working.Luckily I am a strong person. Buy the book to good to leave to bad to stay, it will help a great deal good luck

You haven't really given any information for any of us to give you an good answer to your dilemna. 40 yrs is a long marriage. If he isn't abusive or addicted to anything, has he been selfish, unwilling to be open and honest, had affairs....what? You obviously have some issues for which you feel ready to throw the marriage away but why after 40 yrs.? Have you tried counseling or family? Not enough info.

If you made it this far, don't give up. A marriage is one of the hardest BUT rewarding things a couple can accomplish (especially in this day and age). My grandparents married 60 years and loved till my grandpa died! Go to therapy and get an outside opinion to assess the damage and work on repairing the marriage! The grass isn't greener on the other side....

The marriage is hopeless when after that many years, the wife complains that you snore like a pig and takes that as a cause for separation.

I suppose after 40 years you already know the answer to that question. I wish you would have elaborated on your situation a bit more. Good luck.

When silence takes over and the communication isn't happening like it use to. Plus what-ever you do will be wrong as it becomes hard to please the other partner. If this is the case, its time to move on. Other wise you could try spicing up your relationship and start dating and doing things together.

I'd say when you can't stand that person. If there isn't any thing you can think of that you like or want to stay for, you do have your answer.
