I now own a 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander, because I just couldn't believe the refinement and safety of it. Five-star crash rating, two-star pedestrian protection (on an SUV! How do they get that?), and CVT transmission (no more gears, just keeps adjusting gear ratios seamlessly).
The car cost NZ$ 34.000 - which is about US$ 25.000 if my calcs are correct.
I you like interesting cars, and if looks are important to you (I'm actually a car designer), that one deserves a long, hard look. It feels like a BMW to drive.

I can only think of a couple of SUVs (real SUVs anyway) that cost more than 30 grand.
a Subaru wagon from the 80s is the best SUV.

Depends on what yoru looking for!!! I have an 02 Durango and yes I love it!!! But it has it flaws.....Fords are crappy so dont get on (my mom bought and 06 Expedition new and a month later the tranny went out) but now she has a 07 suburban and damn its NICE.....I also have a 06 Trail Blazer and its a very nice suv if you have no kids(since I got 2 its too small)...But I'd go for a Tahoe...I just got an 08 and paid like 27'g for it and its fully loaded n I mean fully loaded!!! But hey like i said its all up to what you feel good in.....Dodge n Chevy are my choices!!! Good Luck!!!

new or old. You can get used durangos for like 15-20 and they are great. GM makes an SUV called the Avadia I believe I rented it and it looks small but has plenty of room and power. Fun to drive, nice SUV

I second the Durango.... I have an 03 with the 360, 4 wheel drive, what a power work horse, very comfortable and solid riding... second i would recomend an Explorer.

I have a 2007 Honda Element. They're awesome. It was only 24 grand, and it's 4x4. The interior is totally waterproof, so it's great if you have kids and they're messy. I love my little lunch box. <3
