The "yfwd" is the same as a yarnover or "yo" in this pattern.

1st row (this is the right side or public facing side):
Knit 4 sts, *bring the yarn forward as if to purl, knit 3 sts, slip 1 st as if to knit, knit 2 sts together, insert the tip of your left needle into the previously slipped st and pass it over the k2tog, knit 3 sts, bring the yarn forward as if to purl, knit 1*, repeat the instructions between the asterisks until 3 sts remain on the left needle and then knit those last 3 sts. Turn your work.

2nd row: Knit 3 sts. Purl across until 3 sts remain on the left needle and then knit those last 3 sts. Turn your work.

3rd row: Work the instructions for Row 1 again. Turn your work.

4th row: Knit all sts.

The previous responder did not include the "k3" after the first yfwd.

knit four stitches, bring your yarn forward as if to purl, slip one stitch as if to knit to the opposite needle without knitting it. knit your next 2 stitches together then pass the slipped stitch over the knit 2 together. knit the next 3 stitches, bring your yarn forward, knit one. The repeat the directions inside the * *'s till the last 3 stitches. You should be able to complete the pattern within the *'s before your final 3 stitches. If not, tink (knit backwards or undo the row and try again).

I have recently started knitting lace patterns and have to tink a lot.
