I have a Compaq Presario SR1030NX. It if a few years old. I need a new power supply (mine is only 250W) to run a video card that required 300W+. The video card is a Nvidia GeForce N6600 its AGP. So what I really want to know is what to look for in a power supply, Will anything fit in my case? are all power supplies the same shape/size? after talking with compaq they say I have a Micro ATX mid-size tower. Will any ATX power supply fit?

Also Compaq says I shouldnt get anything over 350W becuase it could send to much power to something and damage something. I dont know if that is a lie to make me buy something, I dont see why I cant get 400W+

I was thinking of getting

Retail power supplies are 150mm wide.

That 430W power supply would work. But if you could find a 430W-450W with dual +12V rail, that would be better. Most devices now and the fans draw their power from the +12V rail. Strong +12V rail is preferred for current PCs, especially those w/ powerful video cards.

Do not rely on minimum power supply recommendations. A higher rated power supply runs cooler, lasts longer and gives you elbow room for upgrades.

No, for ram you does not could fret on the topic of the means supply. i understand the ATI X1300XT calls for a minimum of a 350 Watt means supply and that's cautioned to have that's very own guy or woman 12 volt means rail for stability. A gadget can run on a decrease means unit like yours yet for the way long? Plus if means pass is volatile it could ultimately carry approximately harm to different important aspects inclusive of your motherboard, photographs card etc. you may attempt to atleast get a 450 or 500 watt means supply to be on the secure facet and to have somewhat room for destiny improvements.

your computer draws just so much power, if your supply is capable of more power, the computer only draws what it needs.

If they say that, they probably don't have a bigger power supply of the right dimensions.

No, Compaq has an odd size supply, so you have to buy it from them.
