I'm 40 weeks pregnant and I took some castor oil. Has anyone else taken this and if so how long did it take to do anything besides give you gas? Also what is next to come?

The walking doesn't seem to work and neither does jumping. My doctor is giving me one more week and then he is inducing so I wanna do it naturally. I thought it is castor oil not cod liver oil what the heck?

Its a matter of a few more days girl -- I know it gets unbearable but you really are almost there. Things that induce labor are sex and walking, though, so try and at least do the latter as much as possible ;-) If it gets too unbearable, your doctor can also induce labor of course.
Good luck!

i know two people who took it and it worked and I know one who it didn't work for so I guess it just depends on if the baby and you are both ready. I know how you feel, I am 38 weeks my baby is pushing ten pounds but my doctor will not induce because he said the ultra sounds can be wrong by about two pounds. uggh any way Castor oil stimulates the bowels which is supposed to produce progesterons(not sure on spelling). It also will give you the runs and probably make you sick. However from what I have heard when you go into labor the pain usually will make you sick anyway. I am gonna try it if things don't start moving along for me. So let me know if it works. Here are a couple of websites to help answer anymore questions you may have! Good luck.

Edit: I read that about the stimulation of your bowels producing progesteron on one of those pregnancy websites, the last link included is a link to that.

I took Castor oil too with my second child. I was just 40 weeks. I have to say all it did was give me really bad cramps and nothing else. I was told later to be careful taking Castor oil because it is in fact a laxative. The laxative work on you as well as your baby and you don't want that. If the baby ingests that at birth it could be harmful. I do not recommend that you take any more and let nature take its course. I know you are tired of waiting but it is the safest way to go.

I have heard of taking castor oil... might be an old wives tale like taking a bumpy ride. I know how you feel... the last 2 weeks is like 10 years.... Let it happen naturally... no one stays pregnant forever.

What happens next is your cervix begins to thin (you may see a little discharge)... your hips have probably begun to spread... at some point you will lose you 'mucous plug' (looks like a thick discharge) and your 'water' may break... then labor will begin... don't be frightened, every labor is different and I promise it is the most amazing experience.

Best wishes

There are so many things out there that are supposed to speed up delivery, castor oil, eggplant parmeaseana, red raspberry leaf tea, sex, jumping up and down... I tried them all. After 10 months you kinda want it to be done with already. But, you just have to wait.
The castor oil is likely to give you diarhea, but don't be surprised if baby stays put.

Honestly....Metamucil (the powdered stuff that tastes kinda like tang when you mix it with water). At Walmart they sell the "Equate" version that is much cheaper. It works really well, is all natural so it won't harm the baby...will not give you the "runs" never. Mix a teaspoon with a glass of water...wait 4 hours and do it again. You will thank me the next day. You will produce a satisfying "no wiper" Honest...That stuff is GREAT! Clean out your intestinal tract..make more room for the bambino -ette

Did you get permission from your doctor to take it..?? Usually doctors will have you take a stool softener if you are having problems. I don't know if it could send you into labor. I would maybe look up some information on the internet ...google the topic of castor oil and pregnancy.

oh good god; thats the WORST thing to do!!! next to come most likely is a loooooooong sit on the toilet; and frequent trips running to the bathroom all night. i dont know a single person; and from reading answers on here as well, havent once read of anyone who this has worked for labor on. nothing but give people the runs. good luck, and hope youre well rested, cause i predict youll be up half the night in the bathroom. tmw, try some better ideas; fresh pineapple; juice and fruit, nipple stimulation, orgasm, walking. but NEVER EVER castor oil!! :( im sorry you drank that nasty stuff; but for your sake i hope it works for labor!!

My sister took castor oil and it did nothing but make her sick. It sounds bad but have "alone" time with your partner. Doctors say that is the best to induce labor.
