There are different types of Wireless - and looking at the previous answers, they are all mixed up and talking about at least three different types.

1. 802.11(g) & (n) - The first wireless -- NOT an internet Connection - but a LAN (Local Area Network) This type of wireless just extends an already existing internet connection that would be Cable, Satellite, or ADSL. It is the most common of the lot. It's also called WiFi and it what is used in most hot spots. This type of wireless you would need a wireless router such as the D-Link DI624, which plugs into your DSL/ADSL modem. There is a all in one Modem.Wireless rounter.

2. The other type of wireless - an actual internet connection like the 3G network which uses Cell Phone Towers and the Cell Phone system. Very Costly and Slow - At least here in OZ.

3. Wireless Broadband - Install an Antenna on the roof of your house and plug the cable directly into your NIC. This type of wireless can use either public band radio freqs or priviate ones. This is the up and comming brand of Wireless being installed here in Australia - it bypasses the Telephone Company.

Let's cover what you need to get Internet access to more than one computer at home, via wireless LAN.

1. You order or use your existing Cable or DSL Internet access.
2. Your Cable or DSL company sets up your Internet access and typically either rents or sells you a Cable or DSL "modem"(not really a modem, but a network bridge).
Prices vary from $19 per month to $80 or more per month, based on speed, location, and provider.

At this point you have what is commonly called Broad Band Internet access.

Now you want to share that high speed connection with more than one system or you want to be able to cart your laptop all over the house and stay connected to the internet.

1. Confirm that your laptop has a wireless adapter or get one and install it.
2. Get a wireless router. I recommend the D-Link Dir-655.
3. Plug the wireless router directly into the Cable or DSL "modem" via an Ethernet cable.
4. Unplug the electrical cord from your Cable or DSL "modem" for 30-45 seconds.
5. Plug the power cable back in.
6. Check the Cable or DSL "modem" for green lights.
7. Turn on or reboot your laptop.

Now you should be able to walk around the house within a reasonable distance of your wireless router, and stay connected to the Internet with your laptop.
Have a desktop too? Install a wireless adapter in the desktop.
You only need one wireless router for you wireless LAN.

wireless provider is double the amount you would pay for dsl, adsl,or cable. just get one of those and purchase a router from walmart perferabley linksys. if your gonna use dsl,or adsl ask if they have a wireless modem and that will save you from purchasing a router.
although dsl, adsl have internal router's they do require a hard wire or a usb wireless adapter to hook a second comp up. those usb wireless adapter's are not that stable. i've never had a problem with a usb wireless adapter, but i hear many do.
why i stated ask for the wireless modem upfront to save time and money later. with a wireless modem you can just purchase a wireless pci card and have a second computer hooked up using the pci card.

I suspect you want to know how much is broadband and how much more will it cost me to install a wireless LAN?

Check providers in your area. Contact the phone carrier for DSL, cable tv for their service and see what the costs are.

Assume you will spend $100 for a fair wireless home grade router too.

I see what you're searching for coming down the pipes - probable not in the too distant destiny. i don't think of the technologies is here yet although. good now, to be prompt on your individual residing house - not a project - %. up a warm spot - not a project. you will get a bluetooth card on your laptop that could desire to %. up the sign out of your cellular telephone. you will use your cellular telephone minutes - yet you would be related. As Verizon expands it rather is towers, you ought to have the skill to leap on with the hot enjoying cards popping out which would be meant to try this.

It's the "router" you need for wireless. You can use any service provider. You need a router and an ethernet card.

I think Tmobile has it for $10/mo. But, you have to buy a $100 pcmcia card. There speed is not the fastest though. I think most of the providers have a bandwidth cap also.
