The original Al Quaeda was a group of militant organisations controlled by Osama Bin Laden. They Issued a fatwa against the United States in 1994 because they did not like the US presence on the Arabian Peninsula. Their main recruits were young muslims from mosques around the world who were invited to attend military training camps in Afghanistan. The Taliban who were the former Aghan government allowed Al Quaeda to build bases and training camps in their country in exchange for money, weapons and military support.
During the 1990's Al Quaeda attempted several time to attack the United States inlcuding the attack on USS Cole, several failed attacks on the world trade centre and a failed attack on planes flying over the ocean.
On September 11 Al Quaeda flew planes into building in the US which killed a large number of people and led to the afghan and iraq wars.
Since the most of the top leaders of al qaueda, the taliban and many of their members have been arrested or killed. However the Iraq war was very unpopular among young muslims and most people around the world in general. This served as a good propoganda for Al Qaueda and helped them gain alot of support and recruit a lot of new members and un-official al quaeda cells. Muslims around the world became angry because they saw their fellow muslims being killed at the hands of the Americans.
In 2004 and 2005 al qaueda sympathisers bombed trains and buses in Spain and England and used the Iraq war as their motivation.
Many other plots by small al quaeda supporting groups have also been uncovered.

They are a militant Sunni organization, which has been declared a terrorist organization by the US and may other counties.
They goal is the creation of a single religious-controlled state across the middle east, and the destruction of anyone who opposes them. That includes most other Muslims (particularly Shiites), the US, Israel and any other country that does not recognize their religious dogma as the ultimate authority.
The have been around for almost 20 years, and have engaged in terrorist attacks against many countries. They are currently based (more or less) on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

It's an organization of Muslims who follow the Wahhabi sect of Sunni Islam. They favor the spread of Islam worldwide, the imposition of Islamic governments under the rule of the mullahs, strict limits on the rights of women, and opposition to the values and culture of the west. As the largest western power and the source of most of the culture they find so troubling, the US is their number one enemy.
