There are no sure things -- so I could be wrong about this. There also isn't enough information to go on -- like SAT scores.

But I think Penn will be very difficult for you to get into with your grades. You need to do much bette rin your junior & senior years to have a shot -- even then, it will be hard.

If you didn't live in Virginia, I would say the same thing about UVA. But being a resident increases your chances.

I would recommend applying to UVA simply because it is located in your home state and should be cheaper for you to attend. I would also recommend that you compare the programs to see if one offers you more than the other. Which college has a more of an education in specialty areas in the medicine of your interest? Are you also taking the ACT(s). Most Eastern schools prefer the ACT(s) to the SAT(s). Which of the colleges has an actual course that helps you take the MCAT for medical school. Also taking 4 AP classes can be stressful, I would recommend that you have some other classes or activities that allow you some fun time between now and when you graduate your senior year. I would also recommend that you volunteer to help with a charity in your area this shows the college that you can handle some responsibility and that you take them seriously. In the college brochures from the schools themselves they have criteria that you must meet at the college level to get accepted into their medical programs, you may even find the information on their website.

I got to a very prestigious high school, and there are students with your profile that don't get into those ivy league schools and UVA. Your GPA isn't bad, but you should have something 3.5 or more. You don't play any sports that shows that most things you do aren't extracurricular. You have band, key club, and Spanish club which is good, but you are not any club leader or president. You are asian (minority), but to tell you the truth, asians don't get that much higher consideration than a white person. I've asked that question to many counselors and they said that is true. You will get some consideration for being a minority, but most asians are very competitive so its a lot tougher. You can try as a reach school, but to be honest I don't think you will get in. You should apply either way.

Your SAT scores and GPA are most important. Next is the number of AP courses you've taken--as long as you do well in them.

Other than that, schools look for leadership, and a well-rounded person who will contribute to the makeup of the student body.

Will you hold an officer position in Key Club or Spanish Club?

Can you volunteer or get a job in a medical setting? That would look good on your application. And, you may get a medical person to write a recommendation for you.

Good luck!
