self-peace is internal, joy is how you exude that peace and find harmony with everything around you regardless how bad a situation may seem. if you havent found peace with yourself and who you are, you can never have joy wherever you go. so in that sense, it is external because it is a product of of your innerbeing as a manifestation. and this joy cultivates you self-worth, does bridging the peace within and the harmony on the outside world. but generally, it is a communal relationship of the internal and external that keeps joy possible. if there is a gap between the two, it could only be a fleeting happiness.

She's external until the cannibals eat her.... (I know... bad joke
politically incorrect to Joys and cannibals)
Joy is something you can have happen with nary an external influence. Your mind can create a scene, your 'happy place' and a deep ecstatic feeling can come over you.
While the external may seem to cause joy, in fact it is the receiver of those external signals who decides what, if any, pleasure they derive from it. If a truly depressed person sees a magnificent sunset, they are unlikely to feel joy.
My conclusion is that joy is indeed an internal state of mind.

Internal. "En-joy" means put joy in. Externals, however wonderful, are merely the pegs upon which we hang our sense of joy. And its a capacity that can be nurtured, and extended, by its exercise. Some people sadly limit themselves by choosing to feel joy only on set cues - like singing hymns or playing with pets or cuddling kids. But almost everything short of disaster is a cue, when you get the hang of it.

While joy is often evoked by the external, joy is an emotion, and/or an experience of the "spirit." Joy is internal.

it is a reaction between external and internal factors.
it means that you may have everything but you do not feel joy because you do not react with them internally...so you are not ready to receive them.

External gifts such a rainbow, the ocean, or a sunset can elicit joy in the soul. Yet, I believe true joy stirs and originates from within and it is only when one is comfortable in who they are that they can fully appreciate these moments.

Joy is internal - things happen and you "process" them and internalize them and feel joyful! Aren't you glad? Wishing you many many Blessings and hope you experience alot of Joy!

I lean towards internal. Seeing a rainbow, the birth of your child, marrage and the abounding love you feel for your partner...all inner expeirences. Something within you radiating outwards.
