Would it be ethical to pursue medical procedures to turn heterosexuals into gays?

2007-07-16 12:43:44 · 12 answers · asked by Tegarst 7 in Society & Culture Cultures & Groups Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender

For those that do not know me. I tend to ask questions that put the shoe on the other foot.

As stated in an answer to a previous question. I am not in favor of medical procedures on non-adults that do not cure illness or fix defects.

Being gay is neither an illness or a defect.

There is actually a Sci-Fi book about this subject called "The Forever War" by Joe Haldeman. It makes excellent arguments and is one of my favorites.

What is ethical depends on the society-at-large. We would never tolerate child sacrifice today in or "modern age" yet 2,000 years ago it was acceptable in many parts of the world. Its all about where you are personally and in time and space that will decide your world's view. Would YOU believe the same thing? I like to think, yes, no matter where I was born or when, I would still be ME, but no one really knows.

No, better leave sexuality alone and just invest in contraception. If you mess with someone's orientation, crazy stuff happens... as damaging as it is for ex-gay ministries to try to turn gay people straight, it would be equally damaging for straight people to turn gay. Even genetic modification would be worrisome, I think. Even though I know that gender identity and sexual orientation are quite different things, consider the case of transsexual people... genes say XX, but the brain says XY... so what if the genes say gay but the brain says straight? That would be a problem. One might consider the case of David Reimer... again, gender based, but still dealing with sexuality.

I would be very wary of such things. A lot of gay people still want to/have kids, anyway, and just go about the matter through adoption, or surrogate mothers, or artificial insemination and sperm donors.

I think the best way to control the population would be via mandatory birth control... I guess there could be some sort of draconian measure to make all babies sterile... some sort of "It's better for the public health." thing. Actually I could sort of see that happening. With good enough propaganda and willing doctors, eventually a taboo would start and would only get stronger over time. Very few would be able to procreate if the procedures were done right, and those who did would face such social stigma that they'd have to either abort or go into exile.

I think it would be a lot easier to mess with human psychology (look at the taboo on sex already) than to screw with sexuality and genetics.

No. You're basically talking an attempt at involuntary conditioning, which is highly unethical. I doubt it would work anyway, at least not without a very inhumane "Clockwork Orange" style conditioning program. By the time most straight people are grown up the tendency toward heterosexuality is very heavily ingrained.

A voluntary program would be ethical but I doubt you'd get many volunteers.

This is why I love science fiction and the people who create it...It might take the world awhile, but eventually they do catch up to everyone who has already asked "What if...?"

Case in point - where CHILDREN OF MEN gave us a terrifying world where no woman is able to conceive, did you know there was already a movie that took the prediction in the other direction?

I heard this really HILARIOUS thing on the news the other day! They were talking about making a 'gay bomb'. They said that if they bombed the iraqi army with the 'gay bomb' that they were apparently making, then 'everyone would think everyone else would be just too hot, so they wouldn't fight'. I was like '.....omg....'

But, no I don't think heterosexuals should be turned into gays or vice versa.

Only the hot women honey. Please and thankyou.

I think it would be better to get birth control out to the masses everywhere. But that ain't likely to happen either....

Thanks for making people think!
