Until the Vietnam war, the draft was accepted as a "right of passage" for young men. It was accepted that sooner or later, you will give a coupla years to the military.
When the Vietnam mess came along (another illegal WAR), young men started not showing up when they were drafted. The war was killing young men by the thousands, the government was lying to us (and everyone else), we were spending billions of dollars at a war that was unwinnable. People started protesting the draft because people with money and wealth (including Congress) were able to provide a means for their sons to avoid the draft. This meant that only the middle class and poor families were making the sacrifice and getting killed over there.
Young men were burning their draft cards all over the U.S....hitting the streets along with their parents and insisting the war be stopped. Many young men crossed into Canada and Mexico to avoid being drafted - or caught and locked up in Federal prison.
When Congress finally cut off funding for the war and our men were able to come home, the draft was done away with. It wasn't fair...too many poor black and Hispanic men were over there getting killed and too many no-black and non-Hispanic men were never called up. Since that time, men have to register for the draft when they turn 18 but there hasn't been a call-up.
Since Vietnam era, we haven't needed a draft. The volunteer Army has worked very well. Right up to this war our thug-leaders have dragged us in to. Now, enlistments are falling (parents are not letting their kids enlist to go off on an illegal battlefield and get blown to bits) and young people have more brains than to go sign up to get shot up.
If that madman in the Oval Office decides "god" wants him to invade Iran (or anyplace else), the draft would have to be reinstated.....All of our soldiers are either in Iraq or headed that way.
We better all work together and support Congress's efforts to stop Bush - or we will be saying goodby to men between 19 and 35 years old.

For the most part liberals and other who are left of center have opposed the draft, as it is an affront to human liberty and enables the government to engage in risky adventures abroad. But during the Vietnam years (when the US last had a draft) and occasionally since, some have argued for the draft as a levelling measure. Currently people who serve in the armed forces are overwhelmingly poor and people of color, which is naturally troubling. If we're going to have an army, it seems like all classes of society should do their share, don't you think?

If you bothered to watch the movie instead of just picking up the right wing talking points from talk radio or fox you know that Moore was handing out recruitment information and urging politicians to get their kids to volenteer. But hey, why let the facts get in the way of bashing someone you don't like?

When they saw we were doing quite well with an all volunteer army.
First, they said in 2004, "Don't support Bush because he will reinstitute the draft." Then after they lost the 2004 election, Rangel and other key Democrat idiots turned around and proposed a draft.

never.
what the draft would be is just.
all would be potentially bush's cannon fodder, not just kids who need money for college.
if there were a draft, the entire nation would mobilize against this war.
