In an experiment, if I measured a half cup of plaster of Paris in a measuring cup with water. I would then pour it on the center of a paper plate.... After, I would then put dry potato flakes (or dry cereal) on another paper plate....

The plaster of Paris is the shield volcano. The thick liquid would spread out slowly and flatly just like basaltic lava (think Hawaii).

The potato flakes would be your cinder cone. It would pile up higher and the flakes would represent the cinders/volcanic fragments building up to form the cone (think Paricutin).

The best way to see it is to do it.

In addition, your cinder cone will have an "angle of repose" of 45 degrees.
