Why do people spell "Capital" as "Capitol"?

There is only ONE Capitol and it is the building in Washington D.C. That makes it a proper noun. Washington D.C is the capitAl of the United States. Sorry, it always bugs me.

Capital is upper case letters like the first letter in ones name. There are 50 capitols plus the one in DC.

I'd like for you to cover they're, there, their if you have the time. That's one of my pet peeves. It's, its, and its' sends me into convulsions also. Again, only if you have the time.
