6(x/2+1)= -9
distribute 6 to everything within ()
3x+6=-9
subtract 6 from both sides
3x=-15
divide both sides by 3
x=-5

First divide by 6.

x/2 + 1 = -9/6 (or -3/2)

Now subtract one from both sides. x/2 = -3/2 -1 or x/2 = -2.5

Now multiply by 2 to solve for x.

x = -2.5 x 2

x = -5

The basic idea behind algebra is the fact that with an equation, you can do pretty much anything to it, as long as you do it to both sides. The goal is to have the variable that you are solving for be alone on one side of the equation, and the answer on the other,

First, divide both sides by six
x/2+1 = -3/2

Now add -1 to both sides
x/2 = -5/2

Now multiply both sides by 2
x = -5

If you substitute 1 for x in the original equation, you will see that it siplifies to a true equation.

6(x/2+1)= -9
Divide by 3:
2(x/2 + 1) = -3
Multipy out brackets:
x + 2 = -3
Subtract 2:
x = -5.

Its pretty simple. You start out by dividing both sides by 6. then you are left with x/2+1 on one side and -3/2 on the other side.
then subtract one from both sides:

x/2=-3/2 -1
then multiply both sides by 2

x=2(-3/2-1)
and just solve for x!

hope that wasnt THAT confusing! ;)

first you divide both sides by 6:

--> x/2 + 1 = -9/6

then you multiply them with 2:

--> x + 2 = -3

then you subtract 2 on both sides:

--> x = -5
