Well, becoming a better chess player happens over time.

I play every once and awhile on a server called the Internet Chess Club (link is below). My name on there is GeordiLaForge. The membership rates are pretty reasonable ($29/year for students), and the connections are incredible. Grandmasters and international masters from all over the world play on there, and you can get lessons, and play just about anytime you want. Tournaments are constantly going on, and there's more than just chess to do.

Chess is a very complex game.

Playing on the internet is a very good way of improving because then you can play as many times as you want and improve.

I started off just learning the rules and played a few games a day and then got addicted and was playing up to 50 games a day in the end and after about a year of this was beating nearly everyone I played and won a few competitions.

It is a skill and takes lots and lots of practice. Eventually you will just crack it and be able to look at the board and learn to be in total control of the game.

Quick lesson.

the middle 4 squares are called the center. They are more important than the others.

Let me show you. Take a knight. Put it in the corner. It can go to two squares. In the center it can go to 8.

Repeat that for a bishop. Corner -7 center -13. (it can't go where it stands. :))

repeat with the other pieces (not pawns). Only the rook does not care.

And if you are involved in a fight on one side you can more quickly get your guys to the other side if you can go through the center than if you must avoid it.

Try putting pawns there and move a knight from one edge to the other, once going through the center and once not. Repeat that with all the pieces. (not pawns, of course.)

Occupy and hold the center with pawns. (Occupation is easy. Holding is another story.:) )

Oh to try out this stuff http://www.freechess.org

Get a book on openings and basic attacks. And study and play and eventually you will learn how not to take a beat-down.
