It is my recollection that in the 40's/50's two people in the US who were married and wanted to divorce had to go to Mexico (or Las Vegas) to get one. Now most (if not all) states have much more liberal laws which allow divorce -- especially if both partners want it. When did that happen?

In around the 70s with the onset of two wage earner families, divorces became more numerous and the courts instead of bucking the trend decided to go along with the trend and since then divorces have been rising everyday with no turn about in the near future. The baby boomers decided to ruin what your generation gave us as a sign of progress or to move on without ever realizing what they were doing. We are truly a product of our own society

I think in some cases it takes longer now then it did back then. Now they have seen the effects of divorce on kids, and some states have a waiting period. Years ago with less laws it was easier I think.

Marriage and divorce laws are mandated on the state level, not the federal.
Nobody had to go to Mexico, they chose to go to Mexico.
