Reading books is a definite necessity.
If you're going to become a writer, you're going to need a HUGE vocabulary which should extend past the collegiate level of reading and basic comprehension.
So read as many books as you can. Start challenging yourself to read other books outside your genre. This will help expand your word vocabulary immensely.
Having a good grasp of English, grammar, and spelling--also helps.
Being dedicated and enthusiastic about your writing will help you become a great storyteller. Most writers are only focused on making money and trying to break into the traditional publishing industry anyway they can--and sacrificing the heart of the story while doing it.
They think that if they don't hurry up and push something out at the speed of light--then someone else will overtake them, and leave them in the dust.

~Simply by asking this question, you must know you are not capable of doing it. What kind of book? If non-fiction, you need to select a topic and research it to death, then come up with some new ideas worthy of putting to paper. If fiction, are you interested in some meaningless drivel intended solely to amuse or do you want to actually say something with it? If the former, why bother? If the latter, you start with your theme, then design your plot, characters and conflicts to fit. If you are thinking about publishing, you will need an editor and publisher (which generally requires you to have an agent). If you don't want to publish, then just sit down and write.
Whatever you dream of writing, you will have to have a command of language, vocabulary, philosophy, psychology, and people, at the very least, and you will have to have something worthwhile to say and the ability to say it in an interesting way. Don't count on making a living at it.

You need to be bursting with enthusiasm for writing. You need to look forward to sitting down at your computer and bashing out pages and pages purely for the love of getting it out of your head. Don't even think or bother about whether you can find a publisher as you don't know if people will want to read your stuff and you shouldn't care too much. My father spent each New Year's eve tearing up the book he had written in that year and was desperate to get on to the next one, which he did with the stroke of twelve. If you want to prostitute your art and write to get published and to sell, well that is a different thing and I hope you never need to do that.
I know a good amount about writing and books and publishing as I have spent much of my life working in that battlefield.

Get as much education as you can get. You need strong grammar skills as well as story building skills. There is more to writing than just sitting down with pen and paper. Get a theme book or composition book and start jotting down your ideas. Make it a habit to sit and write everyday even if it is only in your personal journal or idea book. Carry a small notebook with you, you never know when and idea will come to you. Check out Long Ridge Writing Group. They have a great program for beginning writers that isn't too pricey and very good. Good luck.

It depends the type of book, but the first thing is to plan the narrative on a piece of paper, and to make notes about the characters and backgrounds of the main characters.
Do any research you need to on locations, jobs etc and file this.
The find a good place to work and get on with it.
Allow 6 months at least to complete.
Good luck!

Know the story before you start writing. Read your thoughts as if they were a really good book, and put them on paper.
When you get a 'block', take a day off. Or even a week, or a month, wait until the story starts to read to you again.
Imagine every second in your day as a chapter in your story. Learn from it, and give it life through your words.

Just keep practicing your work and never give up. The more you write the better. Then you would need to send your work out to agents and publishers. Many will turn you down but don't lose heart. They one yes will be the best thing that you may hear.

First if you have any thoughts..I guess you just jot them down and then you try to turn then into what you want to be chapter wise and send it to some free publishers..your local book store would let you know how to go about it. Good luck and looking forward to reading your material soon..I am all for supporting new authors..God Bless!

Just do it, that's all. There is no trick. Pick anything, and just try writing. Practice makes perfect, almost. Eventually good ideas will come.
You may want to read Steven King's 'On Writing' it is a great read on what happened with him along with solid advice.
As he says in his book, you better like to read and a lot. If not, seek another profession.
Reading and writing are in separable.
