You know, I can accept the fact that some do hate us, but I could really care less why. What possible difference could it make? I mean really, it is their problem not ours.

Russia and the Soviet Union are one in the same.....and um, they're not predominantly known to contain "islamic militant groups." Those are more predominant in the Middle East. The U.S. is seen as a Christian country even though we have many different religions here. They do not agree with the way the U.S. uses its power and authority to coerce other countries. They basically see the U.S. and other western countries as the enemy simply because we refuse to believe what they believe. Therefore, we're the enemy and in Islam, some terrorist organizations have translated certain parts of the Quran to mean that it's ok to be violent towards the west.

Your question answers itself. It is because they are Islamic extremists. Their animosity towards the West is rooted in a mixture of religious intolerance, opposition to social and political “liberalism” of the West, matters related to colonialism and Western support for the State of Israel. Many Islamists have been spoon-fed a diet of anti-Western propaganda all their lives and much of it originated in the Soviet Union. It was not intended to endear them to the USSR, rather the point was to sever their relationships with the West. On the other hand many of the extremists hate the Russians (formerly Soviets) because of both Russian/Soviet imperialism and Communist subversion. Communism, being atheist, is anathema to Islam. Despite the fact that many Muslim were persuaded to join the Communist movement particularly in Turkey, Egypt, Iraq and Iran and Afghanistan, the majority remained opposed to the ideology. Where the Iranians and Turks are concerned the Soviets/Russians have historically been a menace to the populations there.

As regards the US in particular: the US has suffered the brunt of Islamist and Communist propaganda. But part of the American problem is America’s own doing. While I agree with US Cold War policy in the Islamic world, it was understandably distasteful to both radical and liberal Muslims. Many in the Muslim world expected unqualified support from the US in their opposition to European colonialism. After all, the US launched a war to gain its independence from one of those colonial powers. But the US chose to lean towards support of the colonialists as issues of Communism became more pervasive. To the Americans this was a matter of rational self-interests but to the Muslims it was nothing more than hypocrisy and betrayal of the values this country espoused.

You're implying that thier are extremist islamic groups that don't hate the west. I doubt that's the case. There may be some for whom destroying western civilization is much further down thier 'to do' list than it for others, but they'd all get around to beheading us sooner or later if they had thier way.
