Unplug the unit, pull it out of the wall, and take it outside. Using a gentle hose, wash the indoor and outdoor coils, avoiding the electrical components. Wash the condensation pan very well, maybe add a drop or two of dish detergent.
let the unit dry for 1/2 hour or more, then replace and plug in. If you get the same smell, toss and replace.

I would call someone to come and look at it.You never know it could be a very serious problem that could get worse.

sounds like you are out of freon, if it smells burnt your compressor is shot,get a new ac.
