I've seen this mentioned here about three times, in reference to the 2012 end of the Mayan calendar. Where is this information coming from? The plane of the ecliptic and the galaxy's equatorial plane are nowhere near close to coinciding or becoming coplanar, or whatever. What's the deal?

Hi. The equatorial plane of Earth precesses over time as you know. The Mayan calender, as explained here http://www.levity.com/eschaton/Why2012.html determined that a special alignment was to take place on that date. The Earths and the galaxy's planes would align.

From the site: "December 21st, 2012 (13.0.0.0.0 in the Long Count) therefore represents an extremely close conjunction of the winter solstice sun with the crossing point of Galactic Equator and the ecliptic..."

Mystical bullshit to sell books. There is no (and never has been) any alignment of the plane of the ecliptic and the galactic plane.

It is true that around this time (i.e. somewhere between 1990 and 2020) the solstices have precessed to be in the plane of the Galaxy, but it's a slow and approximate wobble. There's nothing particularly special about 2012.
