If we leave, we will send everyone who has sided with us, including their government, to a dreadful death.

Probably, Muqtada and the men around him believe that if he can avoid a direct clash with the US army then he will win in the end. His popularity among the Shia is great. In the past few weeks his men have stopped carrying their weapons so openly in the streets and have closed a number of their offices in Baghdad. But the militiamen are seldom far away. In Sadr City they have only retreated deeper into the vast shanty town of two million people that is the greatest bastion of Sadrist support.

The sectarian violence and civil unrest will continue, whether the US is involved or not.

Eventually, one faction or another will achieve general dominance, or various factions will achieve regional dominance over different parts of the countryside.

I'm assuming you are talking about Muqtada al-Sadr, His recent activities have been anti-American, but his current stated goal is to unite Sunni and Shiite factions to promote stability within Iraq.

So, while he might be one of the factions that gains regional or eventual overall control, it would be hard to say Iraq would "fall" to him. The US keeps claiming that their goal is a unified and stable Iraq. So, if that happens, even if the population becomes anti-American, that's the way democracy works. We either respect the decisions of the majority (even if they are against what we want) or we're being hypocties again.

It is in a state of civil war and unfortunately the group with the most guns will probably win the battle for government control...at least for a short period of time.
