Yes, this person also has 2-3 beers a night in addition to the Rum and Coke a week. The Rum and Coke is usually in a large plastic drink cup saved from Taco Bell or Checkers.

In my opinion, drinking a single rum & coke every day of the week does not make you an alcoholic. But are you SURE this person is only having one? Seems to me that if you're only drinking one a day, a 1.75 bottle of rum ought to last longer than that!!!

If you are going through a 1.75 Liter bottle of rum a week, then that's cause for concern. You might want to contact someone at Alcoholics Anonymous.

It sounds like this person is dependent on alcohol for whatever reason, be it physical or psychological. A Rum and Coke every night is probably too excessive to be considered a casual or social drinker. In my view, due to the weekly volume and almost daily habitual consumption of liquor, they are an alcoholic.

None! I had a problem with alcohol and used to consume at least 15 alcoholic drinks a night... or afternoon.

It all depends.

AA defines an alcoholic as "anyone who has ever consumed a drop of alcohol."

I define alcoholic as "one who NEEDS alcohol in order to promote one's own sense of well-being."

One person who consumes that much rum over the course of a week may be classified as an alcoholic, while another might not...to my way of thinking.

An alcoholic, to my way of thinking, is one who has an addiction. Can this person stop drinking? That's the real issue.

Well, I can tell you this much . . . I am an alcoholic (sober now, 8+ years) and during my drinking days I drank about the amount you say your friend drinks. It's a lot of booze . . . way more than a normal social drinker would ever drink.

If your friend ever decides to get help, you might want to steer him or her to AA. It worked for me.

someone who drinks every night is technically speaking an alcoholic. i would encourage this person to overcome dependencies but you have to remember that there is a difference between someone who has a mild alcoholic dependency and someone who destroys his or her life through alcohol. nobody is perfect, and we all could use some improvement, but take it slow and don't worry, and people will find their way in their own manner and their own time.

probably not yet if its just one rum and coke a night. But i say not yet because thats the kind of behavior that can easily turn into getting blitzed every night and becoming an alcohlic.

Thats quite a bit to drink in a week but it really depends also on other factors are you drinking alone? are you drinking other alcohol too? Do you feel like you have to drink?
